A love of learning can help your child go far in life. There is no doubt about that. However, what do you need to do in order to give them that zest for life? What steps do you need to take, as their primary caregiver, to ensure that your son or daughter has a zealous appetite for learning? It isn’t as simple as flipping on a light switch in their head, but it isn’t overly difficult either. Here are a few tips that can help.
Lead By Example
If you want kids that are curious and want to keep learning new things, show them that you are that way. Be their example, and constantly be asking yourself (and them) why and how. If the two of you can’t figure it out, then look it up! There are tons of websites devoted to learning about nearly any topic you can think of, so go on a hunt and see what you can dig up together. The more you show them the value of learning, the more they will adapt it into their lives.
Set Them Up with the Right Environment
The way you set up learning in their life is going to stick with them for a long time. If you set up the environment around them as one that values learning, they will adapt to that as well. This needs to be done both at home, and at whatever type of educational facility you put them in. One suggestion is putting them in a Montessori school, which puts a higher value on hands-on and exploratory experiences than most public schools are able to do. However, the ultimate choice is yours.
Give Your Child the Opportunity to Teach
Some of the best ways of inspiring a love of learning include letting your child share their knowledge. Have them teach you something new. Allow them to read or explain things to their younger siblings. The more they can learn and share what they learned, the more inspired they will be to want to continue learning. Make this a regular part of their routine to allow them to get the most out of it.
